Ivan's mother told me one day that when she took him to the speedway as a little boy he'd be watching the races then tug on her skirt and say, I will be World Champion won't I mum ? She'd pat his head and answer Yes Ivan of course you will !

No possibly or arguably about it Ivan Mauger is the greatest speedway rider ever. In an age when all my schoolmates wanted to be George Best or Bobby Charlton I wanted to be Ivan Mauger. Ivan is my greatest sporting hero and I am so saddened by his passing. My condolences to Ivan"s family. The great man has passed on but for me the memories will live on forever. RIP Ivan Mauger.

I still remember watching Ivan race for the Diamonds at Poole in the Provincial League days, and thinking this guy is pretty good. Little did I know then that that Dorset lad would end up living most of his life in Ivan's home country. Thank you, sir, for years of thrills and wonder. Kia Kaha
