To wide eyed kids that first saw a speedway race in the US in the seventies, one man stood as a God that all others were measured against. I saw Ivan ride twice, and he took my breath away. You just knew you were witnessing epic talent, tempered in the cauldron of hard fought battles. Like so many young teens, I slept under a proudly displayed Ivan Mauger poster above the headboard.
